Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

What can be Done? -By Kelly Lynch

What is PCOS?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common hormonal disorder affecting 5-10% of women of reproductive age (12-45yrs). The problem occurs when tiny follicles in the ovaries bunch together to form a bundle of follicles or a ‘cyst’. When a mature egg is to be released at ovulation, the egg cannot break through the follicles. This causes an array of symptoms from infrequent or prolonged menstruation, excessive hair growth, acne and obesity. PCOS is the number one cause of infertility in women today and it also increases a women’s risk of Diabetes type 2 by 40% by the age of 40.
