An Egg a Day...

Question: I love eating eggs and really enjoy an egg on toast for breakfast in the mornings.  Is it healthy to eat an egg every day?  I’ve heard that they increase cholesterol levels?

Answer: Eggs are an affordable, versatile food.  They are high in protein, Vitamin D, and biotin and a source of key nutrients such as vitamin D, riboflavin, choline, selenium, iodine, lutein and zeaxanthin.  Several studies have clearly demonstrated the lack of relationship between egg intake and heart disease or stroke.  Healthy people can eat an egg a day, provided it forms part of a healthy balanced diet.

Facts about eggs that are especially noteworthy:

  • Protein: Eggs are a complete protein source, containing all of the amino acids (‘building blocks’) essential for human health.  Compared with other high protein foods, eggs are a relatively inexpensive option.
  • Vitamin D: Eggs are one of a few natural food sources of vitamin D.  Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, maintaining bone and teeth health.
  • Choline: Adequate choline intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding is critical for foetal brain development, learning ability and lifelong memory function.
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin: These two anti-oxidants play an important role in keeping eyes healthy.
